WAXAHATCHEE LILACS

‘Lilacs’ is the second serving from Waxahatchee’s forthcoming album, Saint Cloud, set for release on March 27th via Merge Records. The soul-searching narrative that we found in preceding single ‘Fire’ has cropped up once again in this new number in which Katie Crutchfield’s expressive vocal bounces along with the metronomic rhythm and those Americana guitars. Speaking about ‘Lilacs’, this TMR favourite says that this was “the last song I wrote for the record and it's mostly just about obsessive/negative thought patterns. It's about backsliding into old behaviours that don't serve you and sort of letting your worst self get the best of you. [...] It's meant to capture that moment of heat that happens right when you realise you're wrong or that your issue is more with yourself than with someone else - being flawed and fragile but making progress inch by inch.” The subject matter may be a little uncomfortable, especially for those of us who struggle to back down even when we’re wrong, but Waxahatchee’s songwriting skill provides some ease for even the most stubborn of listeners in the chorus which “serves as a sweet little resolve,” as she continues, “I wanted it to feel like the light at the end of the tunnel and the reminder that it can always and often does get better." The song also comes with an engaging music video featuring dancer Marlee who embodies the relationship with the self in her solo choreography. - Hannah Thacker
